Chapter Ten

Galway. Wednesday 9 a.m.

“It was a pity about Dylan.”

Gretchen studied her female companion’s face warily. “What do you mean?”

The response came in an accent far more local than her own.

“I mean he was sweet. And he was good in bed. Who will I sleep with now? You four have each other.”

It was said petulantly and the teenager’s gaze flicked past her companion to alight on the tanned Adonis across the room. She gazed at Kurt Nilsen in such an openly predatory way that his girlfriend erupted angrily.

“Dylan was guilty! They were all guilty! And being hot in the cot is no defence!” She turned towards the young man, who was typing studiously on his laptop. “Kurt. Back me up here! They all had to die!”

The young man murmured, “Yes, elskling, yes of course they did” soothingly while still keeping his eyes on his screen.

But it wasn’t enough reassurance for his girlfriend so Gretchen pointed accusingly at the other girl.

“She should leave! I don’t trust her. We don’t need her now that we’re nearly done.” Her voice rose to a jealous screech. “We don’t need her anymore. We don’t need her!”

The tall brunette in question, who had been gazing hard at her during the exchange, first as if Gretchen was being childish and then as if she was insane, began to rise slowly from her chair and move towards the door. She was halted mid-flight by Kurt banging his fist on the table triumphantly.

“There! He’s done it, just as we’d hoped. This guy’s good but not as good as Roman.”

Bloodlust instantly forgotten, everyone in the room rushed across to look, but a full minute of peering at the screen still didn’t enlighten most.

Roman took his friend’s place at the computer, tapped to enlarge a section and motioned them to look again. This time there was a series of nods and smiles.

“You see? The police geek posted a question on my slicing and splicing technique to lots of hacker boards. They must’ve worked out how I did it but couldn’t follow my digi-dust, so now they’re trying to crowd source people to give up my name.”

Irina gazed at her lover anxiously. “But that’s not good, Roman. Someone might tell them.”

He slipped a muscled arm around her waist and pulled her close. “Don’t worry, Rina. No-one will give him a name because I’ve never used that hack before now and I won’t use it again. But while the cops are searching for me on here they might just give away something about their search for us, and forewarned is always forearmed.”

The leader glanced around at his team.

“Look, I know it’s not easy being cooped up but we’ll only be here a little longer, so play nice, will you? It’s sunny so go out and get some fresh air. And, Gretch, we’re all in this together now, so you’ve got to stop this talk of getting rid of people. We wouldn’t have got as far as we have if she hadn’t helped us out, and remember that we still have our last job to complete.
